A DAY IN THE LIFE OF... Spinal Network Lead Nurse Liz Moir

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF... Spinal Network Lead Nurse Liz Moir

A window into the clinical world of our liability expert witnesses...

NO TWO DAYS ARE THE SAME

I don’t have a typical day, as no two days are the same. My role covers multiple sites where I deliver training, workshops, clinical practice updates and educational sessions predominantly for nursing staff, sharing updates on the latest spinal care research and evidence-based practices. This includes training on postoperative care, neurogenic bowel and bladder management, spinal procedures and pain management strategies. I also mentor specialist spinal nurses, providing guidance on specific challenges in clinical practice and facilitating skill development. This may involve one-on-one coaching or leading small group discussions to enhance clinical competencies.

ENHANCING PATIENT CARE THROUGH EDUCATION

As lead nurse, participation in network board activities is part of my role. I regularly collaborate with other healthcare professionals to discuss policies, quality improvement initiatives, and integration of new protocols that align with best practices in spinal surgery nursing care. These are cascaded locally, regionally and nationally.

I am currently developing a comprehensive and transferable digital training package linked to a competency framework to ensure the standardisation of training. My role is key in enhancing patient care through education, nurse mentorship and active participation in governance and strategy within the spinal surgery networks.
